Silent Teddies

OBJECTIVE

  • Reduce dependence on public funding through SELF-HELP projects.
  • Provide life skills training, based on the philosophy of teaching one how to fish rather than providing him with fish.

BROAD STRATEGY

Operate sustainable long term projects that can generate income while providing employment opportunities to the Deaf as well as training them with life skills

The Community Service Centre for the Deaf (CSCD) has realized one of its cherished dreams: the establishment of the Silent Teddies Bakery. The journey has been fraught with difficult challenges, yet has been a very fulfilling one with many heart-warming and encouraging moments. The hard work put in by the small team of Deaf Teddies included staying up late into the nights before major festivals to ensure that all orders were met. Indeed, it was a clear indication of how perseverance and determination can triumph over the odds. The support of the public who ordered the cookies was an immense confidence-booster to the Silent Teddies in showing that their cookies are being sought by the public.

The Silent Teddies Bakery was officially launched on 2nd September, 2010. The bakery is also part of the Teenage Entrepreneurial Development Program, also called TED. Thus the members are the Teddies. The program was organized to teach young hearing impaired children at the CSCD to be self-sufficient and equip them with entrepreneurial skills.

Today, the Silent Teddies bakery is an enterprise specializing in pineapple tart cookies, among a wide variety of delicious cookies, bread and muffins. The proceeds from the sales go directly into enhancing the CSCD students' vocational skills and other training programs. The Silent Teddies hope to equip a kitchen with cooking utensils and some electrical items such as a small oven, blender and stove for skills training in cooking as one of the preparations for the future set up of a café to be run by them.

Your support for the Silent Teddies project will go a long way in bringing this budding enterprise to greater heights, giving the CSCD students a real sense of pride, confidence and self achievement.
